Knocking down our heritage
Dear sir
I have read with interest the article in page 4 of the Panorama of
the 17th of May 2007 where it says: The Listing of the Victualling
Yard: what irony!
Its good to learn from Mrs. Gigi Sene that the victualling yard is
to be listed and protected under our heritage laws. I agree that the
Rosia Tanks were truly unique, and we have lost them forever.
It is also good to know that there is an intention by our present
government to consult further with the heritage bodies to review and
classify Gibraltar’s rich heritage. Indeed, our historical assets
should be protected and preserved.
As recently as last month we have lost another bit of our heritage.
A beautiful old English cottage called "Filomena House" has been
demolished at Devil's Tower Road. It was flattened down, also gone
forever. Perhaps now our fellow Jewish Gibraltarians can acquire
that piece of land now that their cemetery is reducing - becoming
smaller as time goes by. This is a fact.
Lastly it has come to my attention that another beautiful British
cottage at Devil's Tower Road is earmarked to be demolished very
soon, 29 Redroofs. This is the house next to the Lady Williams
Cancer Support Centre. This is very sad. Is the Lady Williams centre
going to be wiped out too?
Yours faithfully
