Barbaric act on a fledgling: Seagull hung over bridge
|
A young fledgling gull has been discovered dead after being hung by its neck with a boot lace over the footbridge on Winston Churchill Avenue. The grim discovery was made by various young children as they crossed the bridge on their way to school on Monday morning.
GSPCA Inspector Iain Kane, who was on his way into work at approximately 8.45 and noticed the children gathering round on top of the bridge clearly looking at something, was appalled to make the discovery.
?This defenceless bird would not have stood a chance as it was only a few weeks old. The fact is that someone has deliberately caught this bird, tied a bootlace around its neck and callously hung it over the bridge to its death.?
Understandably, many of the parents taking their children to school and who witnessed Inspector Kane untie the bird were visibly shocked.
Mr Mark Pizarro, veterinary surgeon, stated ?This is an inhumane act. This bird would undoubtedly have suffered as a result of its ordeal.I would ask the public to alert the clinic or police if they find any bird which appears ill or injured.
Inspector Kane who will be investigating the incident said ?Anyone with a sense of compassion will be rightly outraged by this barbaric act. From experience, I would suggest that this is the act of a young person, probably trying to impress friends. However, a clear message has to go out to such cowards that this sort of cruelty is completely unacceptable in a civilised society and will not be tolerated.
"I would appeal to anyone with any information regarding this incident to contact me on 47729. All calls will be treated in confidence and you can remain anonymous if you wish.?
