Bruzon's "diatribe", says Govt
|
The GSLP?s Charles Bruzon?s diatribe against the system of allocating housing to the elderly and to applicants who are medically categorised ?A? is totally reprehensible, reaching, as it does, the depths of insensitivity when he appeals unashamedly to the emotions of persons who have lost loved ones, in an attempt at scoring cheap political points, says the Government.
This is yet another example of GSLP gutter politics based not on facts but on a gross attempt at distorting reality and manipulating the sick and elderly.
A statement adds: Applicants on the medically categorised ?A? list require very particular types of flats, generally on the ground floor. Often, such applicants also express the wish to be housed in one particular area of Gibraltar, near their relatives, as opposed to any other area. These very specific flats required are not always readily available in spite of Mr Bruzon?s disingenuous attempt at creating the illusion that there are hundreds such flats lying empty around Gibraltar. This is simply not true and Mr Bruzon knows it. The reality is that the Ministry for Housing makes every attempt to accommodate as quickly as possible applicants on the ?A? medical waiting list which number 91 and not 226 as Mr Bruzon?s purposely inflated figure states in an attempt to mislead thepublic. The figure of 226 includes applicants on lists other than the ?A? category. Also, Government?s lift installation programme is allowing the sick and elderly tocontinue to enjoy their family home for much longer than before. Very successful too has been the construction of Bishop Canilla House and a similar block now being built at the Waterport Terraces site. Furthermore, there is no doubt that the purchaseof affordable homes will release houses that Government will be able to offer persons on the list.
RECORD
"Far from being insensitive towards the needs of the sick and elderly this Government has a record that far outstrips anything the GSLP ever did for the sick and elderly when they were in Government. The GSLP is clearly and very seriously concerned that the Government?s housing plans that are now unfolding will undoubtedly break the back of the waiting lists and will provide people in Gibraltar with the quality, well constructed and properly finished homes that are a far cry from those built by the GSLP and which 10 years later this Government is still having to refurbish and repair," the Govt said.
