Study to improve Sandy Bay situation

In response to reports in the media on Sandy Bay, the Government would like to assure the general public that the Lifeguard Service is at all times providing a vigilant and professional duty at our beaches.

There has been no Lifeguard boat at Sandy Bay for the last few years. This is because the ramp to the beach had to be cordoned off due to storm damage, making accessibility for the boat impossible. This situation is currently being reviewed and will be addressed for next year’s bathing season.

However, in cases of an incident, the boat from Catalan Bay covers emergencies at Sandy Bay and is always quick to react. There are four lifeguards on duty at Catalan Bay. The RGP marine section is also alerted if required.

There are two lifeguards on duty at Sandy Bay and they are vigilant at all times. The lifeguard has a telephone available at the Beach Attendant Post, which is a short distance from the Lifeguard Post. However, an extension has now been provided to the Lifeguard Post, too.

On this particular day, the lifeguards acted, as always, in accordance with their training and were able to assist the bathers in question.

The Government adds it is currently conducting a thorough review of all our beaches in time to implement even further innovations for next year's bathing season, making an effort to improve on the current facilities and services and provide beach users with an enhanced product for 2013.

"The Government is committed to ensuring that this very important aspect of Gibraltar’s environment, leisure facilities and tourism product is of the highest standard," says statement.
