Immigrants heading for Europa Point

An eye-witness told Panorama yesterday morning that there was a small boat off Europa Point which had attracted the attention of the RGP. The Spanish Guardia Civil then made an appearance.

Since it was not absolutely clear what was going on, we contacted the RGP who confirmed that just before 8am yesterday, a small vessel was detected in the Strait of Gibraltar heading towards Europa Point, with 8 illegal immigrants on board.

After it was observed that all men on board were in good health, they were taken to the Port of Algeciras by the Guardia Civil, said the RGP.

Spanish sources, however, said that the Guardia Civil had rescued the 8 immigrants, when about 2 miles from Punta Carnero.

The immigrants had been detected 'by a vessel from Gibraltar', which called the Spanish.

The immigrants are all males.

This was the second case of immigrants in the area. Six male persons, some 5 miles off Punta Carnero, were equally detected and taken to Algeciras.
