Free rides on frontier bus route for resident pensioners

Old Age Pensioners residing in Gibraltar will now be able to use Route 5 bus route free upon presentation of their Gibraltar I/D or Social Services Card.
This resolves a bone of contention since other routes became available free, but not route No.5, pensioners thinking it was unfair on them. This has been possible with new arrangements made on the frontier route whereby it is now serviced by the Calypso 'red buses'.
Neil Costa, Minister for Tourism, Public Transport and the Port, said “As I made clear in my budget speech, the introduction of free bus travel for pensioners on Route 5 is another step in the realisation of this Government’s manifesto commitments.”
It has not been made clear if the cost of providing the free service is being met by the bus operator or by the government.
