Cathedral Bells to ring in celebration of the Queen?s Birthday

The 8 tubular bells at Holy Trinity Cathedral have been silent for the best part of twenty years but thanks to a generous grant from the Gibraltar Naval Trust, and modern technology, they will be ringing once more.

"We are delighted that the first occasion on which they will ring again will be in celebration of the 80th Birthday of Her Majesty the Queen. We will be joining churches throughout the Commonwealth by ringing at 12 noon local time which will ensure bells will ring throughout the day across the globe," said a spokesman.

The idea of refurbishing the bells came from one of the Cathedral Church Council members, David Gilson who is also our organist. It has taken a long time to come to fruition as we needed to ensure funds were available. When the Gibraltar Naval Trust agreed to make their generous grant we were able to get the Whitechapel Bell Foundry (makers of the famous ?Big Ben?) to produce all the necessary new parts and at the same time to provide electronic equipment for the chiming. The construction work in the Cathedral has been generously undertaken by ?Electricon?.

?Electricon? is a relatively new company, specialising in Electrical and Construction works set up and managed by proprietor Simon Vaughan, a member of the Cathedral congregation. Simon says he would like to thank Graeme, Ian, Anthony and Edmundus for their hard work and efforts on the installation of the chimes and preparation of the belfry. ?Electricon? are happy to have been able to help with such an important project for the Cathedral.

The Dean, Churchwardens and Cathedral Council are so grateful for all these efforts and overjoyed that the bells will ring out once more, not only on this and other special occasions but for their regular services. The bells will also chime on the quarters during the day, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
