Convent Open Day

Lady Johns has thanked the Gibraltar community for the generous support that they gave to the Convent Open Day. Over 1200 people attended the Convent, and the event raised over £9000 for the Gibraltar Diamond Jubilee Trust Fund.

Lady Johns also held a ceremony at the Convent to draw the winning raffle tickets and present prizes to the winners of the various children’s competitions. The raffle prizes were a VIP Champagne Dinner donated by the Rock Hotel, a Planter with Plants and a Crown-shaped Cake donated by Momy Levy. The winning tickets were numbers 393, 563 and 362 respectively. Notary Public James Neish and representatives of the media were present at the draw.

The winners of the children’s competitions were: Painting Competition – Katie Elizabeth Orciel Picture Quiz – Bella Allan & Amber Prescott

Quiz – Eva Gonzalez & Stephen Fisher

The final question in the quiz was “What would you have in your dream garden?” The answers on the two winning entries were “Pool, Flower and an animal shelter” (Eva) and “Water feature and fish” (Stephen).

Lady Johns said “I’d like to congratulate the winners of our various competitions. I’d also like to thank everyone who supported this event: those who provided sponsorship, those who helped with the organisation or on the day itself and, of course, those who turned up to enjoy the event. We said a year ago that we wanted to do something really special for the Diamond Jubilee, and we’re pleased to have achieved that – and to have raised so much for the Gibraltar Diamond Jubilee Trust Fund. A lot goes into a day like this – we’ve already started planning for next year!”

In the course of supporting a worthy cause and having a good time, those attending the Convent Open Day consumed 500 scones and a selection of cakes and purchased the entire 2012 stock of Convent Garden Orange Marmalade.

GRGA reaches for the stars

The other weekend saw Gibraltar Rhythmic Gymnastics reach an all time high! Emma Bosio and Sian Holmes accompanied by Coach Sally Holmes attended the British National Championships in England.

Hard work and commitment has certainly paid off. Emma Bosio in U11 put in a fantastic performance at the Championship competition. On Friday and Saturday she competed her four apparatus in the All Round championship and placed a marvelous 4th place overall. Emma placed 5th for Freehand, 3rd for Rope, 4th for ball and 5th for Hoop. These results put her through to the finals for all apparatus on Sunday.

In the finals she managed to keep up this high pace and placed 4th overall in all of the apparatus, narrowly missing 3rd place in freehand by 0.025 of a mark. “The level of competition was very high” said Coach Sally Holmes, “And Emma was pitched against some new and amazing talent, for her to be ranked 4th in the whole of Great Britain is a phenomenal achievement!” Emma is the first gymnast from Gibraltar to make all apparatus finals and has achieved the highest ranking ever.

Sian Holmes competed in the Junior section, unfortunately in an unlucky twist of fate in the 2 min warm up before the competition, Sian broke her finger as well as damaging ligaments. She proudly and bravely completed her clubs routine but the medical staff at the competition advised her not to continue as she could do further damage.

Sian competed the next day her free dance routine, the only routine she was able to compete in as it had no apparatus, a modern hip hop cheographed by Jolene Gomez and finished in an amazing 7th place.

Many thanks are extended to everyone in the association, parents, gymnasts, coaches, friends, club sponsor Stephen Ffrench Davies of Governor's Street Chambers and anyone involved in any way for helping make this year so successful and we have great hopes for the coming season.
