Jellyfish plague
|
During the past few days our beaches on the eastern side of the Rock have experienced an infestation of jellyfish, which, on some occasions, has been severe enough so as to warrant restrictions in bathing.
This influx in the presence of these invertebrates has not been an isolated occurrence at our shoreline, but rather also a widespread scene along the south eastern Spanish coast.
The species of jellyfish that currently plagues our eastern coast is commonly known as the Mauve Stinger, due to its colour, which can change from pale red to mauvebrown.
The Gibraltar Tourist Board, through its lifeguard service, is closely monitoring the current situation at all our beaches. Lifeguards will restrict bathing if and when required.
Members of the public, in the case of being stung by one of these jellyfish, are advised to seek initial treatment at any of our Lifeguard Posts.
