GBC fan Picardo even prepared to hand over land for free to hitherto unknown outside operators

Fabian Picardo says he is a GBC fan (fan being short for fanatic), as such he must be the only person in Gibraltar who must have noted that GBC programing has impoved and that Radio Gibraltar has an improved local news service.

But there he was in Parliament, almost thinking that he owns GBC.

He is enamoured with GBC because they cover an election, that's once every four years! Great stuff. What makes him think no other broadcaster could do that, and possibly at even lower cost to the taxpayer?

Not only that, but he should not be seen to be partisan by saying he is a fan of anything. It would have been more prudent had he said he was a television and radio fan, without pointing his finger at anyone in particular.

In fact, he does not seem to realise that he is promoting a monopoly when, in fact, he ought to think how Gibraltar can be like everywhere else, where the public have a choice when it comes to broadcasting.

It also provides for greater freedom and democracy, and for better programming, as has been seen everywhere as soon as a choice is provided.

You cannot compare GBC something that does not exist, until the day when the public-funded monopoly ends and there is free and fair competition on the airwaves of Gibraltar.

But what may be happening to Mr Picardo is what happens to any fanatic - it blurs their vision and they do not see the reality of situations.

Not only that but here we have a Chief Minister saying he is going to hand Gibraltar land, via GBC, to outside operators who hitherto are unknown. Why is he hiding the full details of what he intends to do with his favourite business?

Is there land and similar facilities available free of charge for other businesses, or must you be a fan of Mr Picardo to get it?

What about the discriminatory behaviour he is perpetrating? And how can he foment unfair practices, because if you offer money and staff to GBc so that they can improve their online service, what about all those who have been providing such services at no public costs over so many years? Is not their livelihoods now under threat?

But there is our Chief Minister threatening the livelihood of people because he is a fan of GBC! How fanatic can one get?

What one must do to be treated fairly, become a fan? How do you do that, Mr Picardo.
