Death of two senior barristers

Two of Gibraltar's most senior lawyers, J E Triay QC and Sir Alfred Vasquez QC have died.
The news early in the morning was of the death of J. E. Triay, 80, senior partner at Triay & Triay.
He was called to the Middle temple in 1952 and to the Bar in Gibraltar also in 1952. He was married with 7 children.
Mr Triay had been involved in politics, with the Party for the Autonomy of Gibraltar in the 1960s, seeking a settlement with Spain.
A Government statement said: "The Government notes with sadness the death of Mr J.E. Triay, QC. whose funeral is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar extends its condolences to his family.
"Given that the Leader of the Opposition is the son-in-law of Mr Triay, the Government has decided to adjourn the Budget Session of the Parliament until Monday 9th July 2012 at 0930hrs."
Later yesterday came the news of the death of Sir Alfred Vasquez QC,89, who latterly was also a senior partner at Triay & Triay following the merger of Vasquez Benady & Co.
He was called to the Inner Temple and the Bar in Gibraltar in 1950. He was married with 4 children.
He was Mayor of Gibraltar and Speaker House of Assembly for a number of years.
A Government statement said: "The Government notes the announcement of the sad death of Sir Alfred Vasquez QC.
"Apart from being a prominent member of the legal profession for many years, Sir Alfred was Speaker of the Parliament from 1970 to 1992, giving him the distinction of having held the office for longer than anyone else to date.
"Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar extends its condolences to his family."
