Amazon interest revealed by Picardo in Spain - and not in Gibraltar

The internet firm Amazon would like to instal some of its factories in Andalucia, but for it to happen the firm wants to incorporate itself in Gibraltar as a Gibraltar company for tax reasons.

This possible development has been announced by the Gibraltar Chief Minister to the Spanish and possibly other foreign media - and not in Gibraltar where his electors reside. Indeed, he could have announced it simultanerously to both the Spanish and the Gibraltar media, but it was not to be.

It would appear that the plan is in a very embryonic stage as the Spanish Government puts sovereignty first.

In the process an olive branch is being waved at La Linea, where, it is hinted, the factories could be located.

The idea of having a major company incorporated as a Gibraltar company and operating from Spain has been tried in the past but has failed.

The unemployment situation in the Campo would suggest that the creation of jobs would be welcome, but the negative factor is that the ruling PP government in Spain has put their sovereignty claim top of the list. Further, their action against the Gibraltar finance centre, such as the current 10% tax hike, would seemingly hinder any real progress in such a notion developing.
