Improvements at beaches

Since this Government took office in December 2011, it has been working to improve the facilities that are available at Gibraltar's Beaches.

Innovations this year include:

a) Weekly cleaning from 1st February 2012 up to Easter holidays. (The beaches were cleaned twice monthly up to 1st February.) Three times a week from Easter until 28th April and daily since then.

b) Provision and servicing of beach bins as from Easter.

c) The re-positioning of the toilets at Western Beach to the entrance, when it was previously 200 meters away in the small car park.

d) The laying of beach walkways at all beaches from mid-may, which is earlier in the season than usual.

e) Extra access to the beach at Sandy Bay.

f) Purchase of new lifeguard boats that should arrive in two weeks time.

g) Erection of new beach front railings at Little Bay on 1st two levels.

h) Provision of street lighting in public areas at Little Bay where none existed previously.

i) Extra beach concession kiosk at the North end of Eastern Beach, j) The employment of senior lifeguards to improve the service.

The beaches on the Eastern side have been operational since the Easter weekend, whilst both Camp Bay and Little Bay are kept open all year round. This means that many of the refurbishment works carried out are of a routine nature with a specific focus on building up to the "Official bathing season". With this in mind, many of the costs are shared by all the beaches and include items like paint, cement, sand, plumbing equipment etc.

There is also generic refurbishment work carried out at all the beaches that involves the relaying of buoys, walkways, refurbishment work by the GTB maintenance team that only carry replacement costs of parts for the toilets/changing rooms, lifeguard posts and store rooms.

Lastly, there are specific major works carried out that involve other Government or external agencies and contractors. These include for example the replacement of railings and the provision of street lighting at Little Bay or the re-positioning of toilets at Western Beach.

There is specific start date for the beach refurbishment programme as routine works are carried out all year round but the programme was completed by 11th June.
