Mayor's awards announced

The Mayor, Julio J Alcantara, will be conferring eight Mayor’s Awards at a special ceremony to be held at the City Hall, on Thursday 5th July at 7.30pm.

The Mayor’s Awards Committee received a number of nominations for the bestowal of Awards, in the Gold, Silver and Vellum categories.
His Worship is delighted to announce Mayor’s Awards have been conferred as follows:

Mayor’s Gold Award – Mark Anthony Celecia
For his prompt action undertaken on the 11th August 2009, when, without apprehension or regard for his life, he dived into the sea, with strong undercurrents and substantial waves, to rescue three victims, who had encountered difficulties whilst swimming in Eastern Beach. His collective courageous actions prevented loss of life to the three ladies.

Mayor’s Silver Award – Lifeguard Christian Wright and Lifeguard Patrick Borge.
For their actions undertaken on the 11th August 2009 when, having disregarded their own safety, they dived into the sea, with strong undercurrents and substantial waves, to rescue two victims, who had encountered difficulties whilst swimming in Eastern Beach.

Mayor’s Certificate of Vellum – Dario Neale, Jinson Lima and Craig Lima.
For their actions, undertaken on the 11th August 2009, when they rendered assistance to Mr Celecia, in the rescue of three victims, whilst swimming in Eastern Beach. The three men’s subsequent response prevented the situation from becoming more hazardous and life threatening.

Mayor’s Silver Award – Lifeguard Gareth Collado and Lifeguard Matthew Parker.
For their prompt action, undertaken on the 23rd August 2010, when on their way to work they saw an elderly man slump to the ground. They administered CPR and continued providing assistance to St John Ambulance until the man as transferred to St Bernard’s Hospital.

Mayor’s Certificate of Vellum – Lifeguard Nicholas Alex Reyes and Lifeguard Tyrone Montegriffo.

For their actions, undertaken on the 31st August 2010, when they rendered assistance, in the rescue of two persons in difficulties, who had been diving at Camp Bay. The two men’s subsequent response, in diving into the sea, prevented the situation from becoming life threatening.

Mayor’s Silver Award – Anthony Smith.
For his actions, undertaken on the 2nd November 2010, when having disregard for his own safety, placed himself between two men who were struggling with each other in Library Street; the aggressor was carrying a knife and caused life threatening injuries to the victim.

Mayor’s Certificate of Vellum – Joseph Holliday and Lucas Manuel Tocon Muñoz.
For their actions, undertaken on the 2nd November 2010, when they rendered first aid assistance to preserve the life of a victim who had been attacked with a knife in Library Street.

The Mayor would like to take this opportunity to remind the general public that any individual, or group, may be recommended for a Mayor’s Award in any of the three categories, namely: Gold Award, Silver Award and Certificate of Vellum.

Nominees should have shown through their courage, unselfishness and regard for other persons, animals or the environment, to have performed a rescue, preserved life, in any manner or form, or have contributed to such an act by their deed, regardless of danger, circumstances, time, or place.

Recommendations, in writing, should be submitted to: The Secretary, Mayor’s Awards Committee, Mayor’s Parlour, City Hall, John Mackintosh Square, Gibraltar.
