Spain wants negotiations on sovereignty as part of their attacks against Gibraltar
|
by our Political correspondent
The Spanish government will insist at the UN today that Britain and Spain should negotiate Gibraltar's sovereignty, all part of the new PP government in Spain's policy to attack Gibraltar and its people.
Their representative in Algeciras, the mayor and MP Landaluce, said this week that the Gibraltarians had been behaving irresponsibly and violently, which shows his true colours.
Landaluce represents 'his master's voice' in the Campo area, therefore people like the Gibraltar opposition leader Caruana should do well in not blaming Gibraltar if relations are bad. His best policy is to shut up.
Everyone knows that even before they gained power in the Spanish election, and when Caruana was still in power here, the PP were making it known that they would be implementing a tough policy on Gibraltar, in fact they have taken the territorial waters issue to an extreme never done before - and while Caruana was in power.
During the opening of the viewing terrace at the new airport, he said it was important that Gibraltar and Spain should cooperate and show understanding as otherwise unnecessary attitudes and proviocations can develop.
He should say that to the Spanish foreign minister Margallo who is hell-bent in destroying Gibraltar and its people, or is Caruana unable to grasp what is PP policy on Gibraltar?
And he has been giving his views to the Campo media, even knocking the Chief Minister Picardo.
Yet, the Spanish government will today carry on with their attempts to try and re-start sovereignty negotiations.
It is just as well that the new Gibraltar government will be at the UN to counter what the Spanish are saying, because Caruana is boycotting the decolonisation committee for reasons best known to himself.
MAYOR UPSET
Meanwhile the mayor of La Linea Gemma Araujo is upset because the Spanish king is visiting Algeciras on Wedesday but not La Linea.
The visit has been presented in the Spanish media as an attempt at thanking the Guardia Civil for their support to the Spanish fishermen in Gibraltar bay, the mayor having noted that this is the real reason for the king's visit.
She has therefore been surprised and perplexed that a visit to La Linea is not included, because as she says there are 53 fishing boats affected in La Linea and only 6 in Algeciras.
She recalls that when the frontier was closed by Spain in 1969, half of La Linea's population had to emigrate.
There are many Spanish workers who today are concerned that they could end up joining the 10,000 unemployed in La Linea if the PP make things difficult for the Gibraltar economy.
As another 'friendly' act from the Spanish government is to try and destroy Gibraltar's new tax deal, which was worked out during Caruana's days in power. Many people will ask why it is that he does not attack those in Madrid who are trying to destroy Gibraltar.
