Hawk and Tucano aircraft from the RAF will mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Gibraltar by conducting a series of fly pasts and displays on Tuesday.
Watched by HRH the Earl and Countess of Wessex, a Hawk and Tucano will conduct a short display over the harbour when the Royal couple visit the Naval Base in the morning. At 4 o’clock, members of the public will have an uninterrupted view as the aircraft are put through their paces off Europa Point.
Later that evening the aircraft will perform a flypast during the Queen’s Birthday Parade
Although the Tucano is normally used as basic jet trainer by the RAF, the Tucano flying out to Gibraltar is the 2012 RAF Tucano Display Team based at Linton-on-Ouze. Displaying over 60 times per year in the UK and overseas, the team are skilled in putting the aircraft through its full range of manoeuvres, from vertical pulls to rolls.
This year, the Tucano is sporting a distinctive Diamond Jubilee paint scheme.
The Hawk aircraft will come from RAF Valley in Wales and are part of 208 (R) Sqn, Hawk Display Team. The full time role of the Hawk pilots is to train the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy combat pilots of the future.
Flight Lieutenant Rob Brennan, the Tucano Display Team Manager said, “We are extremely pleased to be visiting Gibraltar. It’s something out of the ordinary for us and an opportunity for the team to show their skills to an appreciative audience.”
