Tunnel tour for youth club

A group of leaders and members from Dolphins Youth Club went on a tunnel tour on Sunday. The aim of the tour was to show young people a place of local history which is not normally accessible to members of the public.

The group entered the tunnel system behind the old casino and after being given some brief history in relation to the tunnels strategic importance during World War II, begun their walk along the Great North Road. Most of the walk happened in darkness with young people relying on their torches which added to the sense of excitement.

Throughout the tour explanations were given regarding the different areas encountered including “Brigade Headquarters” with its old Nissen hut and kitchen including remnants of the ovens and large stoves used to feed the troops.

Further along the group came across a small cave and were given an explanation regarding Calpe Hole Generating Station.

The outing provided the young people with an opportunity to build up their knowledge of local history while having fun with their peers.

Dolphins Youth Club is always on the lookout for new members, so young people aged between 12 and 19 years who would like to know more about the club?s programmes and days of opening can contact the Youth Service on 20075020 or email gibyouth@gibtelecom.net.
