British frigate sails into Gibraltar as helicopter demarcates British waters
|
The British frigate HMS St Alban sailed into Gibraltar today, all dressed up with bunting no doubt to mark he Queen's Diamond Jubilee, which Gibraltar itself is celebrating with a number of varied events.
Always a welcome sight in Gibraltar, this visit is particularly welcome as it comes at a time of tension with Spain, which is claiming that Gibraltar does not have territorial waters, a claim firmly denied by Britain and Gibraltar.
A helicopter from the frigate was soon circling the Rock several times, as if demarcating British territorial waters.
A number of Royal Navy ships as well as RAF aircraft are visiting Gibraltar this summer, for 'routine visits and training exercises,' as the MoD puts it.
Minehunters, frigates and destroyer will be visiting, including the submarine parachute assistance group and RAF squadrons including Tornados.
Lt Cdr Nick Chapman RN, Queen’s Harbour Master said: “I am delighted that we are able to provide facilities for visiting units and meet their requirements, whether it be in terms of stores or training facilities. It reinforces Gibraltar’s importance as a Forward Mounting Base.”
