UK and NATO units coming to Gibraltar
|
British Forces Gibraltar is set to be busy over the coming months hosting UK and NATO based units who are coming to the Rock for routine visits and training exercises.
The summer period will see months of planning come to fruition with number of Royal Navy ships and Royal Air Force squadrons visiting. The Submarine Parachute Assistance Group (SPAG) who visited earlier this year, will also be back.
Between now and the end of August, a number of mine hunters and frigates will stop over to refuel and collect stores. The FGS Oste is due to visit on 31 May as part of a NATO Task Group en-route to exercises in the Mediterranean. She will be shortly followed by HMS Diamond, one of the Royal Navy’s T45 destroyers who will be visiting en-route to her deployment in the Gulf region. This will be a particularly special visit for HMS Diamond and Gibraltar, as the Ship’s sponsor is Lady Johns.
Away from the sea, RAF Gibraltar will be no less busy hosting the SPAG and then Tornados from 9 Squadron RAF, both of which plan to take advantage of Gibraltar’s settled summer conditions to conduct training exercises.
Lt Cdr Nick Chapman RN, Queen’s Harbour Master said: “I am delighted that we are able to provide facilities for visiting units and meet their requirements, whether it be in terms of stores or training facilities. It reinforces Gibraltar’s importance as a Forward Mounting Base.”
