Spanish nationals in tobacco arrests

Six men have been arrested by HM Customs in four separate incidents. Two vehicles and 56,400 cigarettes have been seized.

EASTERN BEACH
Four Spanish nationals were arrested at Eastern Beach. The four men were observed acting suspiciously in the area at the northern end of Eastern Beach; uniformed officers of HM Customs arrived at the scene and apprehended the men in the act of attempting to bury a commercial quantity of cigarettes in the sand.

The men, all La Linea residents, have been bailed to surrender on June 14th. 19,800 cigarettes (99 cartons) were seized by HM Customs. The Royal Gibraltar Police assisted in this incident.

VEHICLE
A Spanish registered vehicle and a commercial quantity of cigarettes have been seized by HM Customs. The car was searched in the Waterport area and 18,000 cigarettes (90 cartons) were found therein. An investigation into this incident is ongoing.

GARAGE CASE
Two Spanish nationals were apprehended by HM Customs in a lock-up garage in Vineyards estate. The 24 year old local resident and a 21 year old resident of La Linea were arrested by Customs officers consequent to a search of the garage and a locally registered vehicle therein. Both men have been bailed to surrender on May 31st. 15,000 cigarettes (75 cartons) were detected in the operation. The cigarettes and the vehicle have been seized by HM Customs.

FLED TO SPAIN
In a separate incident, Customs Officers gave chase to four men seen running towards the frontier fence at Eastern Beach. The men fled to Spain and were seen to be apprehended by the Spanish Civil Guard. A commercial quantity of cigarettes in a number of bags was found hidden on the shoreline. 3,600 cigarettes (18 cartons) were seized in the incident.
