BREAKING NEWS (UPDATE): SPANISH AND GIBRALTAR PATROL BOATS IN MAJOR INCIDENT OFF GIBRALTAR
|
There was a clash between Gibraltar and Spanish vessels in a major incident off Gibraltar late Wednesday evening. The Algeciras fishermen had earlier rejected a fishing agreement entered into between the Government of Gibraltar and the fishermen from the border town of La Linea, and threatened with going out to sea to carry on fishing.
Three Spanish fishing boats had gone out to fish but launches from the Gibraltar law enforcement agencies prevented them from doing so.
Two vessels from the Spanish 'Guardia Civil' which had come to their rescue clashed with the Gibraltar vessels. Spanish sources said that the incident went on for an hour, with a Royal Navy vessel also involved.
A helicopter, reportedly Spanish, was later seen circling Gibraltar bay just off the areas of South and North Moles where the fishing incident was taking place. The helicopter left at 10.50pm.
This is the most serious incident since the present fishing dispute erupted, with the Gibraltar government demanding that its Nature Protection Act be respected by the Spanish.
