Over 90 tenders for 13 ex-MOD houses

The Government says it has received 91 tenders for the 13 ex-MOD properties located at Buena Vista, known as The Ramps.

The tender closed on 4th May and successful applicants are in the process of being informed. The names of the applicants and the amount bid per property will be published in due course, in respect of these and other property tenders.

It will be recalled that the previous administration concluded an agreement with the Ministry of Defence on 23rd July 2011 for the transfer of lands and properties from the Ministry of Defence to Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar.

Commenting on the matter, the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia explained: “It is a condition of this document that the Gibraltar Government has to reprovision the Ministry of Defence with residential accommodation and other facilities the expenditure for which shall be up to a maximum of £66 million. This means that the Government needs to raise as much money as possible from the sale of MOD properties in order to be able to reprovide and relocate the requirements of the Ministry of Defence.”

Therefore the Government has closely studied the different circumstances of each tenderer on a case by case basis but has concluded that the thirteen houses in the Ramps will be allocated to the highest bidders in each case.

There were four tenderers who bid exactly the same amount for the last two properties and who also placed them in exactly the same order of preference. This being the case, a draw has taken place in the presence of the four tenderers and two have been selected.

There are still a number of MOD properties and flats which will be coming onto the market shortly which will be suitable for first time buyers and others wishing to improve on their personal circumstances. In addition to this, the Government will also be putting on sale a number of properties of its own.
