Questions for Parliament

Selwyn Figueras, Opposition Spokesman for the Environment, Planning, Technical Services and Telecommunications will be asking a variety of questions of the Government at next week’s session of Parliament.

Mr Figueras will be quizzing the Minister for the Environment on the arrangements in place for the management of the Alameda Gardens and in respect of geotechnical surveys of the area, where the much vaunted Commonwealth Park is to be provided. The issue of the Government’s commitment to deliver a carbon neutral Gibraltar is another of the variety of matters relating to Government policy that Mr Figueras will be raising. The Opposition Spokesman for the Environment will also be focusing on the management of the Barbary macaques and the very real, daily threat these represent to citizens in many areas around Gibraltar.

Jaime Netto, Opposition spokesperson for Social Security, Social Services and Health & Safety, will be asking Government a wide ranging number of questions on all aspects of his shadow responsibilities. On matters to do with Social Security, he will be asking if the Old Age Pension and the Minimum Income Guarantee have been increased on the 1st of April and if so by what amount. He will be also be asking if there are any plans by the Government to amend the Social Security Pension Scheme and if there have been any companies that may have become insolvent since this question was last asked in March.

For Social Services, Mr. Netto will be asking about the level of incidents of violence or absconding taking place, since this question was last asked, by Looked After Children in the care of the Care Agency. Mr. Netto will also be asking if the previous requirement of two GCSE passes for applicants for the posts of Care Workers have now been dropped by the new Government and if contract workers’ contract of employment have been unilaterally altered by the Care Agency. Finally, and most importantly, Mr. Netto will be asking what training programmes are being introduced for juveniles in the care of the Care Agency.

A further group of question will be directed at the Minister for Health & Safety with regard to the number of inspections, accidents, prohibition and improvement notices that may have been carried out by the Factories Inspectors generally throughout Gibraltar. Mr. Netto will also be asking if any breaches to the Health & Safety legislation was incurred as a result of the works being done at the KGV Hospital.
