Unpleasant odours as tank is emptied
|
Nature Port Reception Facilities Ltd, who operated the North Mole Sullage Plant, are carrying out essential works at the Plant.
Part of these works will include the emptying of the sludge in one of the larger tanks. The sludge will be pumped into lorry bowsers for subsequent export to approved waste disposal facilities in Spain. The high viscosity of the sludge makes pumping operations very difficult and water at high pressure will be injected to blend with the sludge to increase fluidity. It is expected that the emissions escaping from the open tank during blending will give rise to unpleasant odours although they are of no health significance.
The operators of the Plant will monitor emissions throughout the operations to ensure that odours are kept to minimum. These works, which are envisaged to last between two and three weeks, will be carried out in consultation with the Environmental Agency and the Gibraltar Port Authority.
