Wink ends his police career making
nonsensical statements

The Commissioner of Police Luis Wink is ending his career making a series of nonsensical statements.

He moans that reports may be published without the RGP first being contacted, as if this was some kind of police state. All media in Gibraltar have published stories without the other side being contacted.

There are occasions when the RGP are asked and other occasions when this may not be appropriate or possible, but the RGP - like everyone else - can always react to comments made by others in their own time. However, the police can take so long to give a response that a newspaper might well miss their publication deadline as they wait!

If he ever had any complaints, Mr Wink should have put his views across when events have happened which merited such comment, and not make a blanket remark at the end of his career, as this is not the way to fulfil his responsibilities properly. He cannot blame others for his own shortcomings.

And what about his involvement in the Spanish fishermen's row?

The public was told that the fishermen would hold a meeting with him so that the RGP could explain the nature protection act, so that the fishermen were left in no doubt where they could not fish in Gibraltar waters.

Hence, the minute the fishermen produced proposals he should not have got himself involved in any way whatsoever, as such matters can be deemed to be political as indeed the 1999 fishermen agreement was.

Having met him, the fishermen's representatives came out elated, suggesting that a deal was possible and expressing satisfaction with the Commissioner.

People are asking why did the fishermen had such a perception after the meeting.

Such a perception can well put the Chief Minister and his Government in a difficult position.
