If Spain threatens walk-out from UEFA it should be seen as one, big bluff!
|
Talking Point It is being recalled that the last time when the likelihood of Gibraltar joining UEFA emerged, that the Spanish Government threatened with withdrawing Spanish teams from any competition in which Gibraltar participated.
This is the biggest bluff ever, now being recalled because of the progress Gibraltar has made in respect of UEFA membership.
Can anyone imagine the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid dropping out because of Gibraltar? If they did so they would be losing so much money and prestige that the whole thing is a non-starter.
Further, Catalunya and the Basque country would like to be UEFA members as well, so why should they allow the Spanish government to inferfere politically on what is a sporting event?
If the Spanish government were to take that path they would be seen to be mixing politics with sport. And acting childishly!
Cyprus have territorial problems with Greece and Turkey but teams from the three countries are UEFA members.
Besides, football is big money in Spain for any club to allow Spanish government interference.
So, if the Spanish government again start making such threats they should be exposed for what they are. One big bluff!
