GFA makes headway with UEFA

The UEFA executive committee completed its 2-day meeting in Instanbul yesterday with the good news that the request for membership by Gibraltar had been discussed, and a road map was agreed.

Thereafter, the Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) said that it noted that UEFA have announced on their website that agreement has been reached on a roadmap which includes financial and educational support from UEFA.
The GFA can confirm that this roadmap has been approved by both the GFA Council and UEFA’s Executive Committee.
The roadmap will run until the Ordinary UEFA Congress in 2013, when member associations will be requested to vote on Gibraltar’s admission as a full member of UEFA.

Between now and the Ordinary UEFA Congress in 2013, the roadmap identifies several areas in which UEFA and the GFA will co-operate.
Further details on the roadmap will be published today by the GFA in a separate press release, along with information on a joint GFA/UEFA press conference which will be held in Gibraltar next week.

SPANISH FEAR THE INEVITABLE
Spanish press reports were saying that Gibraltar had been given provisional membership and that the voting would take place in London next year for full membership. The fact the meeting is being held in London has made Spaniards fear that this will help the Gibraltar application.

The entry of Gibraltar will be something historic and an interesting precedent for others such as Catalunya and the Bassque country who also seek international recognition, it was being said.
