CCTV cameras here, there and everywhere

The Government has commenced the installation of CCTV cameras in different parts of Gibraltar. This project has followed the locations which were originally chosen by the previous administration, although the new

Government will give consideration to extending the scope of the project.

The Ministry for Justice is leading on this issue.

The Government will also consider moving the hub and control room of the project from Central Police Station, as included in the original plans, to New Mole House Police Station at the request of the Royal Gibraltar Police. This will be the subject of a further study.

There will be cameras at the following locations:

- Casemates Square – 3 cameras;

- the top of Casemates Hill;

- to the east of Casemates covering the Landport Tunnel;

- in the Market Place bus station area;

- covering Waterport Road in both directions;

- Cornwall’s Parade also covering Bell Lane and Engineers Lane;

- the top of Castle Steps;

- Irish Town outside Central Police Station;

- Governor’s Street – 2 cameras.

In its general election manifesto, the GSLP/Liberals said that the use of CCTV can be both an effective deterrent to crime and a useful tool to resolve crimes. It went to say that in Government the installation of CCTV would be progressed in different parts of Gibraltar including areas where residents have requested their installation. This electoral commitment has now been actioned and the cameras have started to go up in several places, says statement.
