Another fire kills elderly person
|
A 71-year old Scottish woman died in a fire at her home in Flat Bastion Road on Tuesday night. She had been living there for about 15 years.
The police said that the pathologist who had been brought out for Sunday's fire at Melbourne House, Harbour Views, has been asked to look into this case as well.
It is thus the second fire in a few days, in each case affecting an elderly person. It raises questions about the safety of elderly people.
In this latest case, neighbours were woken up by the small of fire. Just after 4.30am, two appliances were despatched by the fire brigade. There was initially problems with water as a result of a burst main, with a hydrant having to be changed.
The fire was in the settee area, said the fire brigade. It burnt fiercely. The fire was extinguished in 5 minutes.
Hose reel and breathing apparatus were used. Eight firemen were involved in putting the fire out.
