Former Chief Secretary Ernest Montado
to assist Government on consultancy basis

"His experience is legendary" says current Chief Secretary

The Government said today that it has engaged the services of the former Chief Secretary, Mr Ernest Montado, CBE, to provide advice and support, particularly in the transition process following the change of administration which has also coincided with the appointment of a new Chief Secretary.

Mr Montado’s role will extend to matters relating to the administrative, economic and political business of the Government, including the reform of the Civil Service.

EXPERIENCE

The Government considers that Mr Montado is well placed for this role. He was Chief Secretary for over 20 years, having served four previous Chief Ministers and was at the centre of the two changes in administration which took place in 1988 and 1996. He has a long record of public service for Gibraltar having acted as Financial Secretary and Deputy Governor for extended periods since 1986 up until his retirement in 2007. Mr Montado is an Economist and Chartered Statistician by profession.

Mr Montado will also continue working in the private sector where he has on-going important work commitments. He has, therefore, agreed to assist the Government on a consultancy basis.

Mr Montado continues to be bound by the confidentiality provisions of the Official Secrets Act and will therefore be in a position to have access to such
Government papers and files as may be necessary.

DELIGHTED

Chief Secretary, Ernest Gomez said: “I am delighted that Mr Montado has agreed to assist the Government in this period of review and new administration. His experience is legendary within the Civil Service and, having worked with him before, I know his assistance will be invaluable”.
