Spanish parliament hears that the wishes of the Gibraltarians is the key to their future
|
by our Political correspondent The PP government does not like to hear what the Basques have to say about their future, much less when they defend the right of the Gibraltarians.
The Spanish foreign minister Margallo keeps stirring it up about Gibraltar, as if he has nothing else to do.
The tough Spanish policy he is trying to promote has already been rejected firmly by the British and the Gibraltar gpvernments.
And also by opposition parties in the Spanish parliament.
The PSOE spokesperson Elena Valenciano has expressed scepticism that the Margallo policy is going to get Spain anywhere on its claim to the Rock.
The fact that he has so soon unfurled the Spanish flag over the Gibraltar issue is seen as a sure remedy of instant failure. He is going to open his Gibraltar dossier to close it in 5 minutes without any advance for Spain, he is being told.
And the spkesperson for the Basque 'independence' party Amaiur, Jon Inarritu, must have irritated Margallo, who gets chastised for having waved the flag of Spanish sovereignty over Gibraltar.
Spanish press reports say that the Basques have taken the line that the constitutional future of Gibraltar must not be solved by seeking solutions of the past but by reference to international law, with the wishes of the people being the key - it is the people of Gibraltar and only them who have to decide what they want to be.
The world is changing, he said, and Spain cannot stay behind.
