Increased number of female
prisoners causes concern

by PANORAMA reporter
The Prison Board is expressing concern that the number of female prisoners has on occasions exceeded six, this being the maximum number which can be accommodated in cells in the famale wing.

"When this happens the overspill of female prisoners is kept in 'A' Wing during the silent hours," said Board chairman Albert Langston."They join the other female prisoners in the female wing during the day."

The Prison Superintendent has informed the Board that he is satisfied with the way the Female Wing is being manned by one female prison officer.

This follows the concerns of the Board that one officer may not be sufficient when this Wing is fully or over occupied.

Meanwhile, the daily average inmate population was over 70 last year compared to just over 54 during the previous year.

Indeed prison population at the end of last December was 31 remand prisoners compared to 19 the previous year.

The population of adult males with short sentences (less than one year) was 13, compared to 6 in 2010.The number of adult males on longer sentences (four years and over) was 12 (ten in 2010).

There was one adult female with a short sentence (less than one year) compared to none in 2010. There were no adult females serving longer sentences (four years and over), being the same as in 2010.

Prison population has increased sharply in the last ten years.
