Catalan politician visits Gibraltar Liberals
|
The International Relations Secretary of Convergencia Democratica de Catalunya Carles Llorens is in Gibraltar on a fact-finding visit as a guest of the Liberal Party of Gibraltar.
Convergencia Democratica was the Government of Catalunya from 1980 until 2003 under its historic leader Jordi Puyol. It is now in Opposition in Catalunya, and together with its partner Unio Democratica forms part of the electoral and parliamentary alliance known as Convergencia y Unio.
Carles Llorens has a doctorate in modern history. He is a past regional president of Convergencia and was the representative of the Catalan Central Government in Girona from 2000 until 2004. He is a published writer and historian.
As well as International Relations Secretary of the party, Mr Llorens is also a member of the National Executive Committee of Convergencia and he represents the party in the Council of the European Liberal Democrats.
This is not the first time that senior Catalan politicians come to Gibraltar for discussions with the Liberal Party. In 2004, just before the European elections, the number one on the list for Convergencia Ignasi Guardans, who was since elected as an MEP, led a Convergencia delegation to Gibraltar with Liberal Democrat MEP Graham Watson, who is also the Leader of the European Liberal Democrats.

He will also pay a courtesy call on the Deputy Chief Minister Joe Holliday and the Leader of the Opposition Joe Bossano. In addition to this, Mr Llorens will be received by the Speaker Haresh Budhrani in the House of Assembly and will be attending a lunch hosted by the Liberal Party.
Dr Joseph Garcia said that he had first met Mr Llorens at a conference organised by Liberal International. The Liberal Party of Gibraltar is a full member of Liberal International and Mr Llorens is part of the Catalan Group that participates in LI events. "He has come to learn more about Gibraltar and we hope to learn more about Catalunya," said Dr Garcia.
