MPs invited to attend Gibraltar's revamped National Day

During his ongoing London visit, the chief minister Fabian Picardo has invited MPs to attend this year's National Day, which is to be revamped.

A press release says he hosted a very successful reception in the Palace of Westminster for members of the All Party Parliamentary Gibraltar Group. Over seventy members of the Group from both Houses of Parliament attended.

The Chief Minister, in his welcome address, thanked the All Party Group for their unrelenting support for Gibraltar which had proven so crucial for the people of Gibraltar in the past. He explained the Government’s intention to re-introduce the National Day Rally at Casemates and took the opportunity of inviting as many of those present as possible to visit Gibraltar for the National Day.

The invitation has also been extended to Ministers who Mr Picardo has met, as well as the Leader of the Opposition, Ed Miliband.

William Hague, Foreign Secretary, was unable to attend the reception, but sent his Parliamentary Private Secretary, Keith Simpson MP, to deliver a message that the Foreign Secretary is keen to arrange an early meeting.

CALPE HOUSE MEETING

The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, took time out of his busy itinerary during his first formal visit to London, to visit Calpe House. He was shown around by Albert Poggio, Vice Chairman of the Trustees.

Mr Poggio also briefed the Chief Minister on the workings of the facilities. The Chief Minister has agreed to meet with the full Board of Trustees at an early date.

Mr Picardo also took the opportunity to meet a number of patients who are currently staying in Calpe House.
