Gib rhythmic girls do well

Gibraltar Rhythmic Gymnastics had wonderful results again when three of our groups competed for the first time in the British National Group Championships in Cardiff. The 14 girls in the teams have been working very hard to perfect their routines in time for this prestigious competition. Two of the groups had already competed in the UK in order to qualify for the finals that took place this weekend.

The Junior group comprising of Charlie Cooper, Sian Holmes, Zaylie Da Costa, Gabriella Lyden and Angelina Haveland competed twice with rope for a combined mark counting for the championship. In a strong competition against nine other groups our junior team placed 4th overall. Gibraltar Rhythmic Gymnastics had two groups competing in the Espoir division, the youngest age group allowed to compete. These groups each competed two routines, one with ball and one freehand. The title of British National Champion for each apparatus and overall champion was strongly contested by 18 groups of exciting gymnasts of the future.

Our first groups the Rubies consisting of Chloe Hernandez, Stella Barton, Natalie Cech, Emma Ramirez and Megan Rodriguez, all new to the British Nationals circuit, competed very well and placed 12th overall. The second group competing in this division consisted of Natalia Linares, Emma Bosio, Ashlyn Gonzalez and Isabella Jimenez had an exceptional competition. Again they are all new to the British Nationals circuit but did not let this stand in their way as they collected 3rd place for their freehand, and a fantastic 1st place for their ball routine. The combined mark gave them 2nd place overall. This group also placed 4th on the league table despite having only competed twice, once for qualification and once at the championships. Gibraltar has once again proved itself as a top contender in the world of Rhythmic Gymnastics both in Spain and UK. This beautiful and very complicated sport takes hours of training and dedication from coaches and gymnasts and the club has once again excelled itself. It is the first time Gibraltar has competed in the National Group Competition and the lineup of gymnasts competing are all top in their leagues. Sally Holmes, Head Coach, who has raised the club up to the standard it is today proudly commented that in the eyes of her peers in Britain, Gibraltar is the Club to beat. An extremely proud moment once again for Gibraltar.

A further great result for Gibraltar was seeing our own Georgina Cassar, who is training with the Great Britain team compete and achieve the required marks to attend the Olympic Test event in January 2012. It is great to see this Gibraltarian sports women doing so well, and to see her and her team mates get one step closer to competing at the Olympics.

Many thanks must go to our sponsor Governor Street Chambers, all the supporters of the teams and the parents, Judge and coach Gema Fernandez, Choreographer Jolene Gomez and Head Coach and technical advisor Sally Homes.

Well done girls!
