Two days to choose from for the election

POLITICAL NOTEBOOK
By Onlooker

The chief minister will have been pondering about the next election date for him. Unless he breaks all tradition, and decides to hold the election on Christmas day, the obvious thing is that he has two days from which to select.

Today he is in London and later this week, on Thursday, he will open the recreational thing at Europa Point. This was promised for the last election, but there it is now for the upcoming election.

After Thursday - that's when the Europa Point plaque will be unveiled - he will have time to give the necessary 30-days for an election on Thursday 24 November.

Why do you think he has sent his army of workers - withdrawn from other projects - so that he can half-finish the new air terminal at extra cost to allow him to unveil another plaque, even if some people think it would be wrong to do so as what is right is for a bulding to be inaugurated when it is completely finished and, as a letter-writer said the other day, when the Certificate of Fitness is available.

He wants to hold the election as near as possible to Gibraltar Day because he thinks this will influence some voters.

But let us say that the 20 bathrooms and the 50 toilets have not been finished in time, the thought going through his mind might be to allow another week. This would make 1 December election day.

There are some who think he might go for 8 December, but that is a religious feast - schools closed, Spaniards crossing over in bigger numbers. It may not be the right atmosphere for an election day as we are accustomed to, so perhaps that day can be discarded.

That being the case, he has two days from which to choose: 24 November or 1 December. After all, he is down on record that the election will be before Christmas.

Take your bets!
