Asserting our rights as a people
|
PDP leader Keith Azopardi has issued what he describes as a National Day statement, as follows:
This Saturday we will, once again, gather to celebrate our identity as a people. There will be several events of a civic, political and festive nature. On behalf of the PDP I wish everyone a wonderful National Day with your friends and families.
National Day is a day to have fun and celebrate. We should do so in celebration of how far we have come as a people. It is important to reflect on the struggles for constitutional development of the past and the continuing struggle to assert our rights internationally because of Spanish opposition. As that persists it is fitting there is a political rally at Casemates which forms but a small part of the overall celebrations.
I would like to see as many people as possible come down to Casemates on our National Day to pause for a moment and reflect on the political aspects of our sovereignty, our rights, our self-determination and our resolute wish to exist as a separate people in mutual respect with neighbouring communities. Attending the political rally at Casemates is not a sign of supporting one political party or another. It is a sign of wanting to be there when we assert our rights as a people – the only opportunity to do so in a political manner in the whole day. It is perfectly compatible to attend Casemates and then the Piazza. The timings do not conflict and they are totally different events.
If the PDP are elected to Government at the next election we will return the political rally to Casemates Square with a stage on the square itself. We will invite all leaders of political parties to speak. This is and should be a day for political unity. To stand shoulder to shoulder and send a strong message to the international community.
