Steven Linares, the Opposition Environment Shadow Minister, has expressed his full support for the ESG ‘Clean Up the World’ campaign and will be taking part with his family on the day of action on September 17.
‘Clean Up the World’ is a global campaign and this year’s theme is “Our Planet, Our Place, Our Responsibility”.
This year will be the seventh in which Gibraltar has participated with the ESG and other volunteers. They will be looking at past and new sites to see which will be worked on this year.
Steven Linares commented: “The CUTW Campaign has created major environmental awareness in Gibraltar over the years and these efforts have the full support of the Opposition. I am pleased to support with my family a community effort in which a large number of people volunteer to work to improve the environment we all share and the GSLP/Liberals are committed to.”
The GSLP/Liberals note that the ESG is also pushing for litter wardens and fines, improved facilities such as an Eco Park centralised waste facility, improvements at the City Dump for holding paper and cardboard to stop wind dispersal. It also wants government departments and schools to set up new protocols so everyone uses recycling bins. In addition the ESG says there is a need for clubs, bars, restaurants to recycle waste and to introduce positive signage to promote benefits to community of a clean and healthy environment.
He added: “The GSLP/Liberal Opposition Shadow Cabinet has already been addressed by the ESG who made a presentation on the various measures it wishes to introduce and we fully support many of them. They will certainly be incorporated into our programme for government should we win the forthcoming general election. Certainly the whole community should be backing the ESG in the Gibraltar Clean Up The World Campaign!”
