Another EXCLUSIVE! How the handing over of Chilton Court took place
|
The discussions on the MOD lands deal had not been progressing - and the differences of opinion centred on the MOD insisting that they would hand over Chilton Court in Queensway but with the present sitting tenants, who are soldiers.
The Gibraltar government did not favour this and wanted the buildings to be handed over vacant. But this was not to be the case, and the government finally agreed to take them over with the sitting tenants.
Thus, the impression being given that the government will have 361 houses to put on the market is not the case.
It so happens that there are over 100 flats in Chilton Court which will remain with the military tenants.
Thus, the number of flats available for local use will be around 251.
Another point that has not been made clear is when will the available housing units become available? Anyone would think that this is going to happen shortly.
However, many of the MOD houses will be handed over once the government reprovides the MOD with the new houses that it has agreed to build for them. There are others that the MOD may not need earlier on, or indeed they might be vacant already, and these will be handed over without having to wait for the reprovision clause to be fulfilled.
