The cost of culture

The cost of the culture department oscillates around the £2 million mark. Personal emoluments total £364,000 while other costs exceed £1.5 million.

Where does all the money go? What is described as 'cultural activities including National Week events' cost over £500,000 followed by £300,000 for the museum and just over £200,000 for the John Mackintosh Hall.

The recently approved government estimates put a £50,000 price tag on the Miss Gibraltar show, so presumably this is what the government gives the organiser of the show plus other outlays.

The New Year celebrations? That costs £40,000, while the just-held European Dance Championship has a price tag of £45,000.

By the way, the Retreat Centre Trust gets £100,000, while Heritage gets £144,000 from the public purse.Topping the heritage list is a grant of £71,000 for the Heritage Trust, £40,000 for the Calpe Conference and £23,000 for the promotion and research of heritage issues.

In the year just ended, Miss World 2009 expenses totalled £100,000.

The culture department forks out £14,000 for office cleaning and £13,000 for the telephone service, which is a whole lot of talking.
