Goodenough celebrations
|
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the foundation of Goodenough College, in London, the Fabian Vinet, Minister for Housing and Communications, the Fabian Picardo, Leader of the Opposition, and the Mayor Anthony Lombard, as past residents of the college, have joined in the celebrations of the college, by arranging to be pictured with the logo of the 80th anniversary, at the suggestion of the Mayor.
‘As Mayor of Gibraltar and a former resident of the College, I am delighted to take part in the celebrations!’ said Mr Lombard. ‘The year I lived in London House, whilst studying for the Bar, in London, was one amongst my most memorable. It is a wonderful institution, redolent of an Oxbridge College, where many distinguished Gibraltarians have resided, including both Fabians and not forgetting the late Albert Sanguinetti [1923-2009], who enjoyed the distinction of being the only Gibraltarian to have been appointed a Life Member of the College. Albert’s association with the College was continued, by his great-nephew, James Gordon, who, as it happens, is also my own dear nephew.’
As part of the celebrations, Goodenough College, which opened in 1931, invited alumni worldwide to submit photographs holding its anniversary logo, to be displayed during its anniversary celebrations from June 17th – 19th.
Known as Goodenough College since 2001, the college comprises London House and William Goodenough House, and is located in Mecklenburg Square, London, one of the most beautiful garden squares, in Bloomsbury. The college provides accommodation for students from overseas, undertaking postgraduate study in London. Currently, the college has 650 members, from 90 countries, studying at every university and college in London. Places are competitive with 4 applicants for every place available.
He added: Goodenough College is somewhat unknown locally and I encourage any Gibraltarian planning to study in London, to apply to the college and maintain the proud tradition of residence. I trust our keen involvement in supporting the celebrations, will, in turn, assist and empower, those of our students who wish to apply to the College. are very proud to be able to do so in Gibraltar.’
As part of the local celebrations, former Gibraltarian pupils will be able to meet for luncheon, on a date to be organised, as to constitute, one of the sixty events being hosted around the world. Former pupils will be contacted shortly.
