Illusion of progress
|
Talking Point: How often have we heard that relations with Spain have improved; how many handshakes, embraces, have we been subjected to?
Yet, where is the real progress? In which area have relations truly improved? In which area has Gibraltar made real gains?
It is all an illusion of progress, what else?
We have just witnessed one of the most serious confrontations with Spain ever. Was this the result of good relations?
The idea that one country thinks it can interfere quite openly with the sovereignty of another, and get away with it, is precisely what is happening out at sea.
The response from Gibraltar is anything but Rock-solid.
An RGP launch breaks down; an RN vessel takes an hour to make-ready.
The Chief Minister says that he will buy bigger vessels so that the RGP can exercise its responsibilities properly and effectively.
Then, we hear that the Chief Minister is against his improving the facilities for the RGP.He is not buying any new vessels.
He now calls on Britain to send out vessels of an appropriate size to tackle the problem.
What is the public expected to think about all this charade?
And how can anyone think of putting the livelihood of the trilateral forum above the reality that surrounds eveything to do with Anglo-Spanish relations, Gibraltar-Spanish relations and Gibraltar-UK relations?
We cannot, one day, be treated with disdain by the Spanish Government and the next day we are told that the trilateral forum is great stuff.
Who are they all trying to fool?
The reality of the situation is there for all to see. Relations have never been so bad for a very long time.
There is spin and propaganda which we are all expected to swallow.
But real, genuine progress? That is just an illusion.
