BREAKING NEWS: Picardo takes over as Gibraltar's socialist leader and calls for general election NOW

The new leader of the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party, lawyer Fabian Picardo, has called on the Chief Minister to call an election NOW. Speaking at a party meeting, he said there was talk of a dirty election campaign, when the general election takes place later this year.
But his message to the ruling GSD party was this: "Don't fall into the trap of taking your campaign into the gutter, because the people of Gibraltar will not forgive you for it."
He promised the end of a one-man govenment, alluding to the Chief Minister Peter Caruana, and promised cabinet government with their alliance colleagues from the Gibraltar Liberal Party.
He called for partnership and friendship with Britain, saying that it was becoming increasingly clear that the state of the present relationship with the UK "is not as rosy as Mr Caruana would have us believe."
He told Spain, which claims Gibraltar, that no GSLP Chief Minister would ever agree to any arrangement for the transfer of any part of the sovereignty of Gibraltar.
Mr Picardo replaces veteran leader Joe Bossano, whom he described as a giant of Gibraltar politics. Mr Bossano says he will stand as a candidate for the forthcoming general election, and this was welcomed by Mr Picardo.
