Women's Day should be a public holiday, says union
|
Today's International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the economic, political and social achievement of women, past, present and future.
The first International Women’s Day events were run in Austria, Denmark and Germany in 1911 and attended by over 1 million people. The first I.W.D. was observed on 19th March, 1911 in Germany following a declaration by the Socialist Party. The idea of having an International Women’s Day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protest over working conditions.
Unite Women’s Branch Committee says it fully supports the call for International Women’s Day to be a Public Holiday, as is the case in over 25 countries.
So International Women’s Day remembers the battles which have been fought to build a society that is fair to all its members in a society in which diversity, tolerance, safety, social justice and social equality between women and men and women celebrated what they have done and can do.
The union adds that in Gibraltar women must fight for their legitimate role in society, taking active participation in Trade Unions, political parties and Non Governmental Organizations to ensure that their voice is heard loud and clear.
"This centenary of International Women’s Day should be celebrated by all women in Gibraltar. It is a day for all of us to stand in solidarity with our sisters around the world in their battles for equality and social justice. Unite Women’s Branch Committee wishes all women in Gibraltar a happy International Women’s Day," they say.
