More sewage for Western Beach

Special report by Brian McCann
Work has started on the second phase of the Alcaidesa marina in La Línea, and the first job has been the laying of drains which are clearly intended to connect into the controversial sewer diversion that has caused Gibraltar’s Western Beach to be closed due to the dangerous level of e-coli in the waters of the enclosed basin, where the sewer has its outfall.

POLLUTION

This serious pollution was warned of in my detailed special report in PANORAMA last May, although little notice was taken of the report, particularly by the government. Perhaps because they didn’t want to believe it.

Now, 30cm diameter plastic pipes are being laid whilst ground-bearing pressure tests are carried out to determine the size of the foundations for the new land development.

It is said that this phase is to include a 265-room hotel, a conference centre and a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants, all fertile sources of human waste.

MORE SEWAGE

The site is held by Alcaidesa on a 30-year concession which was granted by Algeciras Port Authority in July 2007 following several years of negotiation and planning. This suggests that the port authority knew all about the method of discharging sewage caused by the construction of the new marina, and that there would be an increase in the flow emanating from the additional building works.

One thing is certain – far from the pollution problem being resolved, it seems that the Spanish authorities are quite content to allow it to be increased even further, turning the sheltered basin into an even more concentrated cesspit.
