Certificates for bus and lorry drivers
|
The Government will be introducing a new qualification for all professional bus and lorry drivers in line with EU requirements.
The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence
(CPC) is being introduced across the European Union to maintain high standards of driving.
The Driver CPC aims to:
• Improve road safety;
• Develop drivers’ knowledge and skills throughout their working life; and
• Improve the knowledge and skills of lorry and bus drivers before they start driving professionally.
New drivers will have to undertake and pass the Driver CPC theory and practical driving tests before getting a Driver CPC qualification.
Current licence holders who are able to drive a bus
or a lorry (D or C class licence) are deemed to hold the Driver CPC by virtue of having acquired rights. However, they will have to complete the required periodic training within five years of the introduction of the CPC in order to maintain their CPC qualification.
Further information on Driver CPC is available from the Government. Bookings for the various tests are already being accepted at the offices of the Department of Transport situated at Eastern Beach Road.
