Baby in 'life and death' airlift to UK
|
A baby has been urgently airlifted to UK in what was a matter of life and death situation. And the airfield had to be cleared of late-night works to allow for the flight to take place.
An MOD spokesman said that at about midnight on Wednesday, St Bernard's Hospital asked for an emergency evacuation from the airfield.
The airfield is closed in the evenings due to works but the contractor was able to clear everything in 90 minutes - which is half the agreed time in the contract.
A Gibraltar government spokesman explained that the 5-week old local baby boy had been diagnosed with metabolic acidosis, which is a build up of acid in the blood stream. If not managed properly it can be fatal.
There was consultation between the paeditrician and Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, and the advice was to send the baby as soon as possible.
This was done in an ambulance plane from Malaga which left at 3.30 in the morning. The mother accompanied the baby.
The airport authorities were being thanked for the prompt action.
