New sporting challenge at the regiment
|
The Royal Gibraltar Regiment has initiated a new sporting challenge which it hopes will now become an annual event. This initial Triathlon Challenge began at daybreak with a one kilometre swim in the Nuffield pool, followed by a 5.5 kilometre run into town and back to Ragged Staff. The final element was a 6 kilometre kayak around the harbour.
Some brave individuals chose to complete the whole course themselves but most competitors were in 3-man teams with each man (with apologies to Colour Sergeant Evelyn Philips) competing in either the swim, the run or the kayak.
There were few surprises when a Headquarter Company team of LCpl Chris Gomez, Cpl Michael Sanchez and Cpl Ethaniel Mor came in first as the team contained the Regiment’s PT Instructor and its canoe instructor. In second place were a G Company team of Sgt Patrick Canessa, WO2 Julian Valverde and Sgt Lance Mauro whilst, in the individual event, the first three places were taken by Capt Robert Matto (B Company), WO2 Kenny Alvarez (HQ Company) and Pte Chris Redondo (I Company).
The whole event was organised by WO2 Kenny Alvarez.
‘This was our first attempt at running a triathlon and it worked so we would now like it to become an annual event and to open it up to all the military units on the Rock,’ said Kenny. ‘But I needed the help of the Navy divers who laid the course for the kayaks and provided the safety boats and, of course, I also needed the help of all the Gun Wharf staff. I’m very grateful to all of them – and to the Regiment’s chefs who provided such a good bar-be-que at the end of the competition.’
At the end of the event, the winning teams and individuals were presented with their trophies by the CO, Lt Col Colin Risso and by the Regimental Chaplain, Father Charles Bruzon.
