Spanish workers worry that Gibraltar could react if Mayor goes ahead with toll

by PANORAMA reporter
There are Spanish workers in Gibraltar who are beginning to worry about the negative consequences for them if the La Linea mayor goes ahead with his plans for a toll to enter Gibraltar.

There could be a reaction which could conceivably affect jobs here, while a local employer has suggested that if there are to be too many problems at the frontier he would have to think about firing his La Linea staff and employing people from Algeciras, who could come over in the ferry.
In a radio debate in La Linea it was said that Gibraltar is not a problem, like the mayor says, but instead it is a solution to the many problems faced by the Spanish border town.

It is said that around 6,000 Spaniards draw their wages in Gibraltar, but La Linea's income from Gibraltar does not end there, as there are many Gibraltar residents who buy goods in different businesses in La Linea - and what about bars, restaurants etc, etc.

NEW ACCESS PLAN
Meanwhile, the mayor has instructed the municipal police to prepare a new access plan to Gibraltar, as well as a pay kiosk to collect the toll. Present traffic flow arrangements are expected to be affected.
It is not for the police to determine if the toll is legal or not, said a council spokesman.

The new arrangements could be in place in a week or so.
However, there is strong opposition to it in La Linea itself. It is considered to be a crazy idea, to make a payment in one country to be allowed to enter another country.
