‘Peaceful co-existence’ with Gibraltar not possible, says mayor

The mayor of La Linea Alejandro Sanchez says that 'peaceful co-existence' with Gibraltar is not possible.
He made this extraordinary statement during a course he attended at a Spanish university in Madrid this week.
Speaking there, he said it was impossible to maintain peaceful co-existence ('convivencia pacifica') between the citizens of La Linea and the Gibraltarians while economic inequality continued.

He was critical of the Spanish government for having tried to impose a number of conditions so that today's march to Algeciras would not take place.
The 'walk' protest has turned out to be a walk to Campamento, where the mayor and his followers will then join a bus for the final stage to Algeciras.
Meanwhile, he reckons he is owed 25 million euros, given that the 'special economic letter' was frozen in 2004.
PP leader Mariano Rajoy, who has been visiting the Campo, has promised to tell Spanish prime minister Zapatero to resolve the problems that La Linea has with Gibraltar.

Nobody in Gibraltar can understand what problems La Linea has because of Gibraltar, given that much of La Linea's income is derived, in one way or another, from Gibraltar.
The mayor says that Gibraltar is going to have an income of 360 million while La

Linea's revenue was 45,000 euros last month. He sees this as a 'spectacular injustice'.
But why should Gibraltar be made to pay for what the 'ayuntamiento' of La Linea cannot generate through their own inability? That is the question many people are asking.
